Sick day and some stuff about me.

So I've been sick all week, but last night I started coughing really bad and this morning it was no better. I figured kids probably didn't want me hacking all over them, but I got ready anyway to see if I would feel better. By the time I got to school, I was certain I was dying. They got a sub for me and I came home.

Addy's with my mom and dad, so I took a nap, got some stuff ready to ship and I actually did a little around the house. A very little, but that's something, right?

I actually spent about two hours this morning just reading. I haven't just laid in bed reading during the day since I was pregnant with Addy last summer. It was pretty sweet. I'm working my way through A Feast For Crows, book four of George R. R. Martin's Song of Ice and Fire (Game of Thrones on HBO). I love it. I love it so much, although not as much as The Hobbit. Granted, there's like 1,000 characters, but there are about 10 main ones and they're ridiculous. Some you want to hang out with and some you just want to hang. If you are a nerd, you would be doing yourself a disservice if you didn't read these things.

The Hobbit is my most favorite book of all time. Don't get me wrong, I love LOTR, too. If we ever have a son, I want to name him Samwise but Tyler is pretty set against it. I guess all this thinking about a bookstore has got me wanting to talk books. I also love Terry Pratchett and Christopher Moore. Nonfiction wise, David Sedaris is the funniest man alive. Those are about it for my favorites. I read lots of random stuff too, but I usually pick an author and stick with them.

I actually sold a used book last night! It's my first fiction sale that wasn't a lot, so that was an exciting $3.99. It was "The Brief, Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao" by Junot Diaz. I read it right after I had Addy and it's an amazing book. It's one I think every human should read so I thought I'd offer it to someone else. It's also very emotionally heavy, and a one-time read.

Ok, also this was weird: I had those dang Monopoly curtains up from like three or four weeks ago and I've been playing around with the pricing. The lowest I had them listed was for $58.99. They had 8 watchers last week, but no takers! Frustrating! So, I put them up for 30 days at $70.00 OBO. I had a message this morning that someone sent me an offer for...$70.00? I accepted it, of course, but it's kind of confusing. Did they mean to actually send me an offer? Did they make a mistake? Weird, right? Hopefully they pay up soon and I can get these out of my house!

  1. I am a huge book nerd too (am actually a librarian, although resigned from my full-time job and just sub since my oldest was born). Have you read the Hunger Games series? It's YA (I *love* YA lit) and has lots of buzz as the next big thing. They're making the movie right now. The books are great! I was at a playgroup this morning and one of the mamas returned a book I had loaned her which got me thinking about the series again.

Also, have you read Augusten Burroughs? I tend to think of him as similar to David Sedaris. For some reason I just don't find Sedaris as hilarious as everyone else (am in the extreme minority, I know) - but I obsessively love Augusten Burroughs. His most well-known book is probably Running With Scissors, my favorite of his is Dry.

Funny about the Monopoly curtains. I had bought a vintage Memory game awhile back for 10 cents and was thrilled to find it had all the cards. Incomplete games were selling for around $20. I put mine up starting at $9.99, and no one bought it. Annoyed, I relisted it at $24.99 and it sold. All about timing, I guess. :-)

  2. Oh, I adore Augsten Burroughs. I didn't read him until after I fell in love with Sedaris, though, so to me he's second best. I've read all his stuff but "A Wolf at the Table". I haven't read that because it's about his dad and his dad sounds terrible, so I skipped it.

The Hunger Games are awesome! I love them and if a kid comes into my room needing to borrow a book for English class I make them take it and read it. That and the Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman, love.

The buyer actually paid for the drapes! And that's awesome about your game! Isn't it strange how it works? You can have something relisted a hundred times and then you just say "whatever", put it at some random price BIN and boom, it's gone. If there's anything eBay has taught me, it's that people are weird.

  3. You're not really missing anything by skipping "A Wolf at the Table." It's lacking all of the self deprecating humor and is just rather disturbing. For some crazy reason I took that book as a beach read on vacation a couple years ago. Ugh. Obviously didn't think that one through - not at all a light-hearted read, or funny.

Have you read either of the books by his brother or the new one by his mom? His brother had an appearance a few months ago at a big book store near me that I was really tempted to go to (just want to get a look at the guy!) but it was either right before or after my son was born and I didn't make it. I have gotten to go see Augusten twice though. Love, love, love.
